With less than 20 minutes of prep work your slow cooker is set and ready to go.

The Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup simmers away on its own, melting the vegetables into this delicious creamy base. A quick mash, a bit of heavy cream and sour cream and dinner is served!

The best part of slow cooker meals like this Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup is that they’re perfect for weeknights now that everyone is back to school or for those hearty meals you’re going to need after a day spent out at the soccer fields watching the little ones run around in a pattern that almost resembles soccer.

This Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup can be ready, waiting for you to come home, peel off the grass covered uniforms and eat!

Tools Used in the making of this Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup:
Slow Cooker: This recipe was made in this slow cooker. For larger roasts you can also brown the meat in the insert and not lose a bunch of the flavor by transferring the meat and leaving the browned bits behind. If you’re thinking of a new slow cooker, consider it if your budget is open.
Better Than Bouillon: You’ll never need to buy boxes of broth if you keep on hand the beef, chicken and vegetable version of this Better Than Bouillon.
Spice Rack – If you buy spices in bulk from local grocers or from Penzey’s, it’s less expensive and significantly higher quality than buying the jars individually. This spice rack helps to keep from ending up being left with tons of little bags of spices.

HOW TO STORE SLOW COOKER HAM AND POTATO SOUP

  • Serve: Don’t leave your Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup out for longer than about 2 hours before putting it away. If you leave it out too long the soup will start to grow bacteria that can make you sick.
  • Store: Always allow the soup to cool to room temperature before you put it in the fridge. In a sealable container, the Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup can last about 3 days. After that, it’s time to throw it out and make more.
  • Freeze: Unfortunately, it is not recommended to freeze creamy soups such as this, because the sour cream and milk will separate and create a grainy texture when defrosted.

  1. Its delicious. A little soupy . I like a think chunky soup. But still really good I added some cheese. I will definitely try this again . Thank you for sharing

  2. I’ve made your recipe many times and our family loves it! I was recently diagnosed celiac. Do you think I could use cornstarch in place of the flour as a thickener? Or should I try a gluten free flour? I worry about the taste being altered.

    1. I’m so sorry. That’s such a good question and I don’t know the best answer for you. I’m leaning toward cornstarch as your thickener. Let us know what you decide to do and be well soon.

      1. I tried this recipe for the first time and it came out delicious! Super easy to make. I added cheese to mine because I put it in practically everything and it took the soup up a notch!! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better! Thanks for the recipe. Going in my book as a fav!?

    2. I used gluten free flour and had no problems. I’ve made it with regular flour and honestly it tastes better with gluten free.

  3. I LOVE this soup ,so does my gigantuous family 🙂 ( still have 3 at home and other 3 still stop by with spouses and kids Lol) As a disabled grandma I appreciate how easy the recipe is ! Came out so delicious and I use Chicken stock in trade of chicken broth to make it healthier . My picky eaters love this too and often ask when Im going to make it again 🙂 Sending love and appreciation!

  4. This was absolutely delicious! I did it 1.5x which filled my crock pot right up for church. Everyone loved it! So tasty and very easy.

  5. I added garlic and some cheddar cheese . You need to dice your veggies very small they take a long time to cook! It was delicious!!

  6. This recipe is a must try! The only things I changed was I used a little less ham, then added about 8 strips of crumbled up (crispy) bacon, then threw in about a tablespoon of origional (green top) Dan-o’s seasoning….WINNER! 10/10 recommended

  7. I’ve been making this recipe for several years! I don’t eat pork but the recipe is just as delicious without it! I have made it with smoked turkey and turkey ham. Sometimes I add a can of white beans! It’s easy!!!

    1. Great feedback Sherry! Thanks for the tips about smoked turkey and turkey ham and especially for the 5 star review!

  8. My family absolutely loved this soup! This is my third time making it!!And not the last I’m sure.Just a bummer it doesn’t freeze well. I don’t mind eating it 2 days in a row Delicious!!!

  9. This is one of the best soups I have ever made! So easy. I left for work and when I came home I finished it off. I did add about 3/4 cups of cheddar cheese. Really easy and really good!

  10. I have made this soup many times. I use yellow and orange carrots in it. I also added celery leaves, and some parsley for more colour. I use chicken Better Than Bouillon to make my broth so I left out the salt. Since I’m married to a Ukrainian I also added a couple cloves of minced garlic. I use evaporated skim milk in it for added creaminess.

  11. Delicious..
Only thing I did different is I used top the tator instead of sour cream and I added about a cup and a half of corn. Will definitely make again!

  12. Made this for the second time tonight. Delicious!
First time I made it exactly as written with the exception I used ham bone broth, tonight I made a few changes: added 1 cup frozen butternut squash cubes and 1 cup of frozen corn. Equally delicious.
    Thanks for sharing!

  13. After I served this for dinner, my kids were SO HAPPY! My youngest said “ mom why didn’t you tell me your making my favorite soup?!” Well at least now I know! This was a huge hit for the family. Will be making it lots this fall and winter!

  14. Delicious and easy! I followed it almost to the letter, except instead of chicken broth I made broth from the ham bone and a few extra shakes of different seasonings. Made Red Lobster cheddar biscuits on the side. Perfect Fall dinner. Thanks for sharing,!

  15. I made this last night! OMG, My favorite Soup! Nothing is better than Ham Soup! I made a loaf of French Bread too! I used your Recipe and It’s wonderful! I’ve made my own recipe Before but yours made it better! I could live on this! Thank you! You have a lot of old-fashioned recipes, Which I love!

  16. I made this recipe a couple days ago, and I must say it did not dissapoint! I did have to put it on high sooner and cook a little longer, but both of those could be that my slow cooker is dying and I cut my potatoes a bit to big. I used a ham bone and ham I had frozen in my freezer from Christmas. In the end I only needed to add a little salt and pepper, but that was fine because I didn’t add any at the beginning as I was using a Dearborn ham. The soup was nice and thick and creamy. Even my husband who really doesn’t care for soups loved it. We finished it off in just 2 days! Thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipe! This one is now in my permanent recipe organizer on my kitchen counter!
