Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes will make you forget your childhood canned sauce memories and make you LOVE sloppy joes again.
Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes came together pretty organically and randomly for us. We have had Philly Cheese Steak Grilled Cheese sandwiches in our rotation for years (because they are AMAZING) and one day we made up a skillet and…. our bread had become furry.
Gross. Right?
So we had hamburger buns on hand from a hamburger night meal a couple of nights before. The changes I made were just enough to be extra gooey and “sloppy” and only took about a minute.
EDITED: You guys are amazing, in just 7 16 30 days you have loved this recipe so much it has already been re-pinned over 125,000 175,000 520,000 times. If you want to read some reviews from people who have already made the recipe, check out the “tried it” responses on this pin (then re-pin it to keep this magic going!).
Philly Cheese Steak Hamburger Helper Skillet? YES.
- Cook exactly as described except double the broth (leave the cornstarch the same).
- Do not rinse your macaroni, the starch will keep the sauce thickened.
- At the step where you’d add the cheese, instead add the macaroni.
- Stir it well together and cook for 30 seconds or until thickened.
- Add in the Provolone Cheese and stir for just a couple of seconds and serve immediately.
This was a second variation of this Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes recipe we ended up making a week after we made these sloppy joes for the first time. I posted a recipe for this too! Head on over after you’re done on this page, its the best pasta dish we’ve had this year!
Want to make these Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes in the Slow Cooker?
- Add the Ingredients (minus the cheese and buns) to the slow cooker and cook on low for 4 hours.
- Use half the amount of beef broth.
- If the sauce is not thick add in another 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon room temperature water. Cook for an additional 30 minutes on low.

Tools Used in the making of these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes:
Cast Iron Skillet: This is my most used pan in my kitchen, heavy, keeps heat well and gives the BEST sear ever.
Chef’s Knife: This knife is one of the three most used tools in my kitchen (tongs and my pig tail flipper are the other two). I love it, I’ve had it for almost 10 years and it is as sharp today as the day I got it. (left column, second from the top). Mind you I love it this much even though I have a ridiculously expense knife set as well.
Worcestershire Sauce: Do not leave this out or sub it for anything else, this is a main flavor component and this brand is my absolute go-to.
Cheez Whiz: I know what you are thinking, Cheez Whiz? This isn’t even in the ingredients. Yes, I know…because it is a secret guilty pleasure. I add it to the top of my sloppy joes even with the Provolone mixed in. I won’t lie, it isn’t high end, but it is DARN good.

Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes
Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes will make you forget your childhood canned sauce memories and make you LOVE sloppy joes again.

- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt

- 1 cup beef broth
- 8 ounces Provolone Cheese Slices, chopped (use 6oz if you don’t want it very cheesy)
- 6 brioche hamburger buns
Directions:
- Add the ground beef to a large cast iron skillet (this browns very well) and brown until a deep brown crust appears before breaking the beef apart.
- Stir the ground beef and brown until a deep crust appears on about 50 or so percent of the beef.
- Remove the beef (you can leave the fat) and add the butter and the onions and bell peppers and mushrooms.
- Let brown for 1-2 minutes before stirring, then let brown for another 1-2 minutes before stirring again.
- Add the beef back into the pan.
- In a small cup mix the beef broth and cornstarch together
- Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, beef broth/cornstarch mixture into the pan.
- Cook until the mixture is only slightly liquidy (about 75% of the mixture is above liquid), 3-5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, add in the provolone cheese.
- Served on toasted brioche buns.

I am loving this twist on sloppy joes! It combines two family favorites!
Thanks Des! It just works so well 🙂
I would like to make the skillet version, but I don’t see how much pasta to use and if you precooked it or cooked it with the broth.
Cook with water, one pound of pasta. I am actually going to be posting a full recipe to this and posting it in the next couple of weeks too. 🙂
Pasta? Didn’t see anything in the recipe about pasta.
At any rate, the sandwich was pretty tasty. I added the butter, but I didn’t see a need for it. I added garlic and cooked the beef, onions, green pepper, mushrooms, and garlic altogether.
She was asking about making it into a skillet version vs a sandwich and I was just giving her my suggestion on that. Sorry for the confusion.
Rather bland what can I do to enhance the taste? Does the cheese melted in the mixture or placed on top of sandwich?
Yes, you want to melt the cheese into the mixture before serving. I’m sorry you thought it was a bit bland but feel free to adjust any of the ingredients to your taste.
If your not concerned about sodium intake…I used powdered beef bullion to make the broth mine turned out delicious
Some of the cheese steaks I have had use white American cheese. It has a bit more tang than provolone, perhaps that would ad a little more flavor.
I added some jarred sliced banana peppers and some of the liquid. It made a huge difference. I think it gave it a nice tangy zip. Made a huge difference.
Ooh, that does sound like a wonderful addition!
this sounds amazing! I really want to make this but have no cornstarch on hand.. any substitutes that you know of?
thanks,
Jana
Flour would be the best substitute in a pinch.
But makes it a whiter color. Still taste goid but not as pretty
I was so excited to try this recipe but extremely disappointed at the flavor. Very bland!! I added chopped garlic , which was only a little help. If I try it again I would add some hot sauce to give it some flavor
You can definitely play with the spices to customize them to your family’s liking or adding hot sauce to give it a kick.
Use Campbell’s beef broth–it’s condensed and really concentrated. I used 1 can and followed the recipe exactly otherwise. They were REALLY great!
I agree that they were bland. Salt needed to be increased.
I am not a fan of bell peppers, so I substitute green chilies and it gives a little more flavor as well as a kick (depending on the heat level of chilies). Most Sub Shops (especially Jersey Mike’s) will do this for you in their Philly Cheese steak.
Anyone try to reheat these for leftovers? My teens are never home at the same time!
This is an easy dish to reheat for busy scheduled. I would suggest sprinkling just a bit of water over it (to keep it moist) and then reheating.
The philly cheese steak sloppy Joe was epic in my kitchen! ??????????
We already ate dinner, but I could grab one of those right now. It looks so good!
Thanks Dee! I won’t tell if you double dinner 😉
These are DEFINITELY going to become my new favorite, too!!
OMG I remember my dad making these!
Yay! A family favorite!!
This is one incredible looking sandwich! I’m super excited to make this because I know my family will LOVE it!!! Thanks for the recipe. Print!
Thanks Renee! Enjoy!!
This would be very popular at my house! Love all of the variations you provided, too (slow cooker!)
Thanks! I always like having options too!
Can you let me know the calories without buns?
Sorry I don’t have the nutritional facts for recipes on the site but I know there are a lot of free resources on the internet from when I’ve cooked for clients with low calorie diets.
I don’t know about calories, but if you’re counting carbs switch the bun out for a low-carb tortilla and make it a “burrito”/wrap. That would cut the carbs down to 7 or 8 carbs.
Any chance you’ve made the meat mix in advance & then froze? If so, did it turn out ok upon defrosting? It looks delish!! And I’m thinking this would be an easy school-night meal, if I can just defrost & re-heat. Thoughts?
I haven’t made it ahead but my suggestion is to cook just the veggies and freeze them because that’s really the only part that takes a bit more time. If you decide to freeze the meat portion, just add a bit more beef broth and cornstarch once it’s defrosted. It really all comes together easily. Whatever you decide, I’d love to hear how it all worked out for you. Hope you enjoy!
I made it as directed with all ingredients (I exchanged the bell pepper for poblano and used 1/2 provalone and 1/2 pepper jack..aaaamazing) and froze it in portions with buns wrapped in foil and plastic wrap and it thawed and reheated great. No problems and no extra ingredients. We meal prep and portion so freezing is important. Fantastic recipe. We also used MFP for nutrition info.
Such a great suggestion for freezing in portions, thanks Stephanie!
I froze a double batch without the cheese and buns. A week and a half later I put it in a slow cooker and added the cheese. They were fine. In fact our neighbor showed up the next morning for the recipe and went directly to the store so he could make some for himself.
Love it! Thanks for letting us know.
This is going to be my next meal! Can’t wait to try it, it looks so good. Thanks for sharing! I will follow up when we try it
Definitely! Thank you!
This was so delicious super easy to make. I used butter toased Hawaiian bread and my husband ate 4 of them!
Definitely sounds like a winner to me!
This so good. I had to change a little because I did not have enough Worcestershire sauce. I use a little great value steak sauce to top off the measurement, and used bouillon cube instead of broth. Will definitely make again and double recipe.
Fantastic! Loved your last minute improvising and glad it all came out wonderful!
I made this tonight and it was so yummy!
So glad you loved it Melanie! Thank you for taking the time to come back to let me know!
I’m not a fan of ketchup. Is the ketchup flavor pretty prominent?
It’s not really obvious but you could always substitute with a tomato sauce or paste. It really just helps to give a bit of flavor and sauciness.
I used bbq sauce because my boyfriend doesn’t like ketchup. Worked really well!
Thanks for the substitution suggestion! So glad you both enjoyed it!
This was absolutely fabulous!!! I am making this again!! (I made it in a sauce pan vs. skillet)
Thank you so much! So glad you loved it!
I want to try this in the slow cooker. Should I cook the beef first? And should the beef broth cut in half be enough liquid or should I keep the full amount?
Thanks for the yummy idea!
Yes, you’ll want to brown the meat first before putting it into the slow cooker cut the beef broth amount in half. Hope you enjoy it!!
I usually cook with ground turkey. Do you think that this would work instead of ground beef?
The taste will be a little different but definitely is a great substitution.
I made this on the stove last week and it was a huge hit! My family is begging for it again…. if I do it inthe slow cooker do I brown the hamburger first? If not do I keep stirring as burger browns in slow cooker? Thanks!!!
So glad you guys are loving it! When using the slow cooker version, you’ll want to brown the meat first. It makes it easier to set it and forget it.
Great quick meal for large families. I tripled the recipe and added a red pepper too. We used gluten free buns or no bun and ate with fork! Delish!
Fantastic Emily! Thanks for taking the time to come back to let me know how much you enjoyed it!
We eat low carb so also ate without a bun and loved it.
I had to mince the onion(used less) andmushroom really small so my husband didn’t notice. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS my favorite new meal!
Sneaky, sneaky….I love it! So glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely delicious!
Thanks Angela!
Yum! They look so delicious. Ill try the recipe out
I made this with ground pork and served over rice. Will make again!
I made this tonight and loved it even though I didn’t brown the meat correctly as directed to do. I altered the recipe to fit my Weight Watchers, Simply Filling diet by using the leanest beef, fat free sharp cheddar cheese, & light hamburger buns. Still tasted great.
Glad you were able to adjust it to fit your dietary needs!
Made this for dinner tonight! Huge hit and even the 8 year old loved it.
I love hearing that the kids love it! Thank you!!
How much sodium or salt is in this recipe. I have high blood pressure. I was wonder if low sodium version.
Sorry I don’t have the nutritional facts for recipes on the site but I know there are a lot of free resources on the internet from when I’ve cooked for clients with specific dietary needs. You can always substitute with a low sodium worcestershire sauce to help reduce the sodium intake.
I am making this for tonight. How early can I make this.
This comes together pretty easily but if you’re looking to prep a few things, you could brown the meat and make the vegetables ahead of time. Once ready to serve, finish up the remaining steps. This way, you’re cheese will be perfectly cheesy!
Planning to make this tonight! I want to double to recipe (my husband can EAT) haha. So if I’m doing 2lb ground beef do I need 2 onions & 2 bell peppers also? (Seems excessive)
And… we don’t like mushrooms 🙁 will it still turn out ?
Thanks!!
I love it! You don’t need to double everything, just use whatever seems like the right amount to you…and feel free to omit the mushrooms (I won’t tell anyone, lol). It’ll still turn out delicious!
Delicious! I only had regular hamburger buns for mine & my hubby ate his open faced on 45 calorie bread and…. we both LOVED IT!
You have to try this! Before adding the provolone, or mozzarella, add 8ozs of cream cheese…OMG! I had a philly cheese steak sandwich at a restaurant in Elko, NV, that was made with cream cheese only.
Thanks Kathy!
I saw this posted all over Facebook, and since I had pretty much all of the ingredients (and I love pihlly cheesesteaks and sloppy joes), I decided to give them a try. Made these tonight and they were a huge hit. I did not use an entire onion and my kids wanted orange bell pepper instead of green, but otherwise followed the recipe. This was one of the best recipes I’ve tried in a long time. Will definitely go in to the regular rotation. Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and let me know how much you loved it!
I made these for lunch today and I love them! Thanks for sharing the recipe! From now on I’m making a double batch at a time though. 😀
Smart idea 😉 So glad you loved it!
All I can say is , OH MY GOODNESS, this is amazing.Thank you so much for sharing
You’re welcome Sherri!
Made this for a quick dinner in our new place for our first home cooked meal here and boy did I make the right decision with using this recipe for a great dinner, quick clean up, and left me craving more..this MORNING mmm..you did great, also I never tried mixing the cornstarch with my broth, what a cool idea and worked beautifully. Thanks for the great meal!!!
p.s. We used smaller flour tortilla’s and made them into a quesadilla style, delicious!
You’re welcome Julia! So glad you all enjoyed it. Congrats on your new home!!
Hi Sabrina. I made this last night and it was so delicious, and, yes, it tasted just like Philly Cheese Steak. I left out the mushrooms only because my son does not like them, and I cut back on the beef broth (1-1/2 cups); I thought it might be too runny. It was perfect and my men loved it. Thanks for a really great recipe!
Awesome!
The biggest hit yet with everyone in the family! Thank You for this delicious recipe that will now have a place in my dinner rotation! I followed the recipe as stated, but I did add some Montreal Steak Seasoning to the beef while browning it. I also added 1 beef bullion cube after adding the beef broth. I served it on hoagie rolls. Delicious!
Yay! Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know how much you all enjoyed it!
Made this for dinner tonight and the family loved it! I doubled the recipe so we could have leftovers. Being newly retired, it’s a struggle coming up with a lunch menu daily. Figuring out “what’s for dinner” was challenging enough! Thanks for a recipe that I know will be added to our rotation of favorites.
So glad I was able to help out! I take it as a huge compliment that it’ll be added to your rotation!
8 oz of cheese – is that a cup or 1/2 pound?
Yes, it’s 1/2 pound provolone cheese slices, chopped. Hope you enjoy!
Just made this, but instead of the buns I used uncut hoagie rolls, cut a hole in one side to hollow it out a little and stuffed it with the mixture (My autistic son doesn’t like getting his hands dirty at all). A bit cleaner of a meal but still delicious!
What a great idea! I’m so glad you all enjoyed it!
Any chance you could make this without the cornstarch and it turn out? Maybe reducing the amount of beef broth and letting it simmer down?
Letting it simmer down would just make less moisture, the idea of the cornstarch would be to create a gravy. Could you sub flour or would that not work for your needs?
Made this just now for hubby & me. We put the beef mixture on wraps, it was a homerun! Thank you.
Would this work with ground chicken? Would you change anything if using chicken?
Absolutely and maybe just to kick up the steak-y flavor a bit of steak sauce?
Absolutely DEEE licious!!! I made it with ground turkey. So good!!!
I made this a few days ago. It was good, but nothing extraordinary. There was no reaction from my kids either way. When they really like something they make it a priority to tell me so I’ll be sure to make it again. This will go in my “Just another meal” file.
I didn’t have provolone cheese but so I used the pepper jack I had on hand and it was delicious! My hubby loves spicy food so I think that made it even better. I ate mine without a bun and hubby and son had 3 sandwiches each!. HUGE hit in this house! Added to my favorite recipes!
That’s a great suggestion for anyone wanted a little bit of kick in the dish!
Can I use shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese instead of provolone?
Yes, but I would suggest shredding your own. It just blends better into the dish and you’ll still have that cheesy goodness!
One of my kids is currently getting ready to chow down on his THIRD sloppy joe! THESE ARE DELICIOUS!!!!!!! Definitely adding these to our normal rotation and look forward to the cheers I receive when the kids ask whats for dinner. 🙂
Sounds like a total parent WIN!! So glad everyone enjoyed it!!
I just have to say how delicious these were! Easy to make and sooooo yummy!
Thanks Alli!
Great meal! My husband loved it! I will definitely be making it again!
Fantastic! So glad you both enjoyed it!!
My son and I made this together last night. Awesome!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Joy!
I made this for dinner tonight and it was sooooo good!! Very flavorable and I didn’t change a thing, except used a beef bullion powder instead of broth. Everyone loved it!! Glad I seen the recipe.
Thanks Michele!
Awesome!! Made it for dinner tonight. It was a HUGE hit. This will go in our meal rotation. Thanks
Thanks Jackie!
I made this tonight with baby portobello mushrooms, and, boy, was it good! Thank you so much for the recipe — it’s definitely going into our regular rotation!
Awesome, so glad you loved it! Having a recipe put into regular rotation is a HUGE compliment, thank you!!
I made this today for dinner. However, I did drain off the fat from the meat and instead added some olive oil. Also, next time I make it (and I definitely will be making it again) I will use much less Worchestershire sauce. I think this is a genius idea! My husband loves steak hoagies & he gave this 2 thumbs up!
So glad you both enjoyed it!
Made these today and everyone loved them. I did add 3 fresh cloves of garlic, chopped, with the vegetables. Delicious! And I know it will be a favorite!!
I love this recipe and I added garlic because I pretty much add garlic to everything lol. And I used flour which I don’t think it makes any difference if you use that it corn starch, in my opinion. I am totally making this again and recommending it to all my friends and family.
Awesome! Thanks Kim!!
We made these tonight. Everyone loves them! My husband, who is a die-hard sloppy joe fan said he would take these over sloppy joes anyway. Thanks for sharing!!
That’s definitely considered a WIN in my book! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Thank you for this delicious recipe. My family loved these. It was simple to make, inexpensive, but full of flavor. We will definitely be making this recipe again and again.
So glad you all enjoyed it!
Could I use this recipe in an Instant Pot?? Would the ingredients still be the same amount?
While I’ve been using a pressure cooker for many years, this recipe hasn’t been tested out for it and I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving a recommendation for it. Sorry. You could always check out other recipes made for pressure cookers with similar ingredients and that might give you some idea of what would work.
I was so excited when I finished making this recipe that I wrote 😀 I didn’t see where to put a review until I saw other recipes that I know I will make now lol It smells glorious. It is perfect for taste and time! I usually like cooking but have been in a slump. Now I am excited and happy to cook for my men 😀
Awesome! Glad to be inspiration and I’m sure their stomachs are happy too, haha! Thank you
I read all the reviews and thought this was going to be a really good meal. I have a family of 5 and sadly not one of them liked this. Biggest complaint was that there wasn’t any flavor to this. Maybe some added spices might kick this up a notch.
So sorry you ended up not liking it. You could definitely play with the spices to customize them to your family’s liking.
Maybe try adding some horseradish to pep it up.
I made this it smelled good cooking but there is no taste to it when its done.
So sorry you thought there was no taste to it. You could definitely play with the spices to customize them to your family’s liking.
OMG! Thanks for the recipe. My daughter and I LOVED it. I did add some A1 steak sauce for more flavor …This will be added to my quick and easy meals.
Delicious but green pepper overwhelmed it all. Suggest using half a green pepper and more cheese.
Does the carb count come from the bread?! I’m low carbing and think this looks pretty good, just trying to figire out wjere they came from. I wouldnt eat mine on bread, more of a casserole type for me.
You could definitely cut out the bread to reduce carbs but I don’t have the nutritional facts for recipes on the site. I know there are a lot of free resources on the internet from when I’ve cooked for clients with low carb diets that you can check to see how it all adds up.
So delicious! My grandkids rated this 5 stars, even after picking out the mushrooms I had added. You captured the savory aspect of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches!
Thanks Janet!
This was very good! My kids won’t eat sloppy joes. but they gobbled these up quickly!!
Will definitely make this again. Thank you.
Yay, I love seeing that the entire family loved this meal! Thanks for taking the time to come back and let me know.
I made these and they are a hit. I put them on sliders.
Great for a party idea!
I adapted this recipe for a keto diet. Replaced the buns with low carb tortillas, the cornstarch for soy flour and ketchup with reduced sugar ketchup. It’s one of our favorite meals. So good and simple. Thanks for the recipe!
Thanks for the keto substitution suggestions! Glad you enjoyed it!
I forgot to brown the meat before putting it in the crockpot! I already put all the ingredients in the crockpot.. can i just brown it all together, then put it back in the crock pot?
Yikes, so sorry I’m just now seeing this!! Hopefully it all ended up working out ok but yes, you could’ve just taken it all out to brown it together since you forgot.
I’m not much of a cook but this was sooo easy. It had so much flavor, just simply delicious! My son loved it! We don’t like mushrooms so I omitted and didn’t have provolone so I used mozzarella. Thank you for sharing! ?
Thank you so much! This dish is so easy to customize so I’m glad you enjoyed it!
These are amazing! I love philly cheesesteaks, but hate having to pay for steak to make them, not to mention the pain of slicing the stuff.? These solve that problem! They’re now a favorite dinner for family friends when they come over!
Thank you so much Zoe!
I made this last night. Having lived in South Philly, I am not sure that this tastes just like a cheesesteak as others have claimed. That being said, it was DELICIOUS, and a hundred times better than a “normal” Sloppy Joe. Couldn’t find Brioche buns, so I just used plain ole’ sesame hamburger buns. Served with a side of fries, and I was a happy lady! I’ll be adding this to my recipe book. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and let me know how much you enjoyed it!
This dish was delicious. Both my four-year-old boys loved it and my husband loved it. I did not have provolone so I used a mix of mozzarella parmesan and asiago cheese. Because my cheese is have salt in them I did not add any extra salt. Delicious! And I served them on potato bread hamburger rolls
Awesome Hanna! It’s so fantastic when you can find a meal that everyone loves!!
Just made this for dinner tonight and I have to say it is one of the best meals I have had in a while! Thank you for the wonderful recipe!
Thanks for letting me know Amy! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Making this in the slow cooker now. Think we are gonna try it in stuffed green peppers and maybe as a new twist on a runza filling.
What a great idea Robbie!
Made this twice now, once with beef and tonight I used ground chicken and chicken broth instead. Great both ways! Thumbs up from all 4 of my kids!
Thanks for letting others know about the ground chicken suggestion Kelly! Glad everyone enjoyed it!
We loved this dish.
This recipe is amazing! My whole family loved it! I have 2 picky eaters and they both cleaned their plates!
That’s so awesome Brandy!! Thank you for letting me know!
I would like to add any corn starch or flour. Do you think it would work?
I don’t think it would. My suggestion would be to use instant mashed potato flakes if you didn’t want to use corn starch or flour. It will slightly change the taste but you’ll end up with the same consistency.
Sabrina! I must ask. Where did you get those buns?!!
Thanks for noticing 😉 Haha, these are Brioche buns. You can usually find them in the bakery section at the grocery store (these specific ones were bought from Whole Foods) and they’re packaged in a 4 pack. They really do up this dish another notch, in my opinion!
I found brioche buns in the deli department at my grocery store, on a shelf display for brioche products. Just another idea in case your bakery doesn’t have them.
I made this tonight for my dinner, but I forgot to buy provolone, so instead added swiss. Normally I do not eat sloppy joes, but this recipe sound good as I like Philly cheesesteak samdwiches. Loved it.
I can’t get over how AMAZING this recipe turned out! I used ground turkey and chicken broth (added a little bit of boullian to the broth) in replacement of the ground beef and beef broth and it was so delicious!! Thank you for sharing! 🙂
Awesome Anne! I do love how you can customize this dish to your liking. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
My husband and I are Philly Cheese Steak fans. When I saw this recipe, the picture drew me in! I made it tonight and it was fabulous! Easier to eat than a cheese steak. My husband loves it! I told my daughter about it too and I am sending her the recipe. Thank you for sharing such a great recipe. I know this will become a family favorite.
Fantastic Nancy! Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and let me know.
My husband & I love this recipe! DELICIOUS!
Yay!! So glad you guys loved it, Brandy!
I made this tonite and it was a big hit with my husband! Used beef stock instead of broth and added more salt and some roasted garlic and added butter right at the end. Deeelish!!
Thank you for taking the time to come back and let me know how much you both enjoyed it!
Forgot to rate it!
Made this for dinner tonight. Left out the mushrooms but it was really good. Hope the leftovers heat up
Made this with ground turkey and mozzarella since that’s all I had. It was so good! I will definitely make it again!
Thanks Stephanie!
Love this recipe, have made it twice, in the skillet. First time used 2 cups broth, second time reduced it because it was too soupy, sloppy. I put the cheeze whiz on the buns before adding the sloppy Joe filling, delicious! Thanks again for another great recipe!
Thank you for taking the time to come back and let me know how much you loved it!
What do you put as sides with this???
You could really add any sides that your family would enjoy, maybe a vegetable or fries are always a winner in our house.
Excellent twist on the ol sloppy joe! Plus a easy tasty remake when you’re hungry for Philly cheesesteak. WE will definitely make this again. Great Job!
Thanks Tim! So glad you enjoyed it!
Made this last night when I thawed the ground beef to make tacos but then couldn’t find the taco kit I swear I got! Fortunately we had a green bell pepper, onions, and some provolone already so it worked out! This was a tasty and quick meal and we quite enjoyed it. I love Philly cheese steak anything!I was skeptical that mixing the cheese into the meat would make it seem cheesy enough (rather than melted on top) but it was plenty cheesy and I didn’t feel the need to add another slice to the top! I used bouillon to make the broth and we didn’t have any rolls so we just had it open faced on toasted bread. Thanks for the recipe!
Glad I was able to help save dinner, haha!
This was really good. I’m not a pepper person but I’d add more next time. Hubby said this is a keeper but next time we’d use hotdog buns or sub bun.
All I know is, I’m coming to dinner, so save me a seat !!
This is a quick and delicious sandwich.
My husband I loved this! I added minced garlic and doubled the Worcestershire sauce. I also bought au jus to dip them in. Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you for the 5 star rating! I’m so glad you both loved it!
This was soooo good and so easy to make. Everyone liked it and I really liked the fact that I could get most of it prepared ahead of time. Will definitely make this again!
Oh yes, the prepping ahead of time makes this meal super easy for a busy weeknight!
Followed this to a T and it is amazing!!! Thank you for posting! The people who said it lacked flavor, I wonder if they didn’t brown the meat and veggies exactly as you indicated. So much flavor happens at that step if done correctly.
Thanks Michele! I really appreciate the 5 star rating!
I want to take this to a football party tomorrow. Can I make it in the pan tonight, refrigerate, then reheat in Crock-Pot tomorrow? What would your make ahead for Crock-Pot recommendation be? Thanks.
Yes, I would add the cheese in just before serving though. You may also need a bit of liquid in the reheating.
Just awesome, kids love it, jammed packed with mushrooms, peppers and onions. I have cheated on occasion and subbed 3-4 slices of white American cheese, when my real cheese drawer is bare. But this recipe has brought much happiness around our family table. It was my 10 year olds chosen birthday meal. Thanks to the chef for sharing.
You made my day! Getting chosen for a birthday meal is a huge compliment! Thank you so much for the review.
made this tonight it was great something different to do with hamburger so good thanks
Even better than I imagined, and easy, too!
Thanks for the 5 stars, Jeanne! Glad you enjoy it!
I made this tonight and it was a hit! I added two cloves of garlic and also used beef stock instead of broth, came out perfect!!
Love it! Thanks for taking the time to come back and letting me know how much you all enjoyed it!
My whole family loved these. The only change I made was adding about a TBS of tomato paste to your recipe because I love the depth it adds. It was wonderful! I think the toasted brioche buns were a great touch. I was skeptical because there were so few ingredients in the sauce, but it was so flavourful. This will be in our regular rotation now.
Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and let me know how much you all loved it, Barb! Winning a spot in regular dinner rotation is a huge compliment in my book!!
I cannot express strongly enough how good your photos look right now. They are making me so hungry for these sloppy joes. They look delicious.
Haha, thank you so much!!
This is absolutely delicious. Tastes exactly like a Philly cheesesteak.
Thanks, Lizzy! So glad you enjoyed it!!
Made these yesterday and was very delicious! Didnt use cheesewhiz just grated some cheeseI. Had leftover gravy from pot roast and added that in. Yummy!will definitely do these again!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
I made this using ground turkey and whole wheat buns. The flavor was phenomenal. I will definitely be adding this to the rotation!
Thanks for the suggestions! So glad you enjoyed it!!
My family LOVES this recipe, it’s easy and a nice variety from the usual sloppy joes! I always add a little steak sauce to it while cookiing.
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
I made the skillet form. It was a hit with my crew. I doubled the broth and the favor was good. Next time I’ll have to make it x2 they ate it up.
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Personally nothing more annoying than to see someone complain about someone else’s recipe!!! It was perfect to her so if you thought it was bland..then that is your fault! Can’t be upset with the fact you didn’t want to season your meat! I notice she didn’t season her hamburger like I normally do so I adjusted and did what I liked at that step!! Me I LOVED IT!! TOP NOTCH!! FAMILY APPROVED!!!
It definitely is customizable to your individual taste. I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Made this for dinner tonight! Absolutely fabulous! Quick and easy and perfect for Monday night football! Thank you for sharing, I’ll be fixing this again soon!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
I loved this! I always hate reading reviews of people who tweaked the recipe but here I go now…I cooked very lean ground beef and seasoned it with salt, pepper, garlic, and garlic and onion powder. Once the meat was half way cooked I added my chopped pepper and onion (bypassed mushrooms-ew) right in bc there was no fat/grease due to the meat being so lean. Once the beef cooked I added the butter and then I added the rest of the stuff. I think 8 ounces of cheese would be way too much…I used 6 and that was too much. Next time I will use French onion soup condensed instead of beef broth.
I’m so glad you were able to customize this to your liking and enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Oh yum! Looks delicious!
Thanks Lisa!
We’re not mushroom eaters at my house. Any other suggestions on a substitute?
You could just leave them out 🙂
Made this last night it is definitely a winner.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Delicious! We used ground turkey and it was spot on!
My family loved it!!
I definitely don’t like bland food, but this was not bland at all! I made a double batch and shared with a friend’s family. We all loved it, kids and adults! I doubled everything exactly, except using a large onion and green pepper rather than 2 small. I used 1 can of Swanson beef broth and one 8 oz package of provolone/mozzarella mix shredded cheese. It was very tasty.
Thanks for dropping by to let me know! I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it!
I thought this was delicious, but I added extra spices due to family preferences: granulated garlic and onion powders. I used Better Than Bouillion Lower Sodium beef base. We will put this dinner into our regular rotation for sure. Thanks for the video and for posting the recipe.
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Yum! We just made this, and I will be making it again.
It’s missing somthing the cheesy texture wasn’t the best we will not make this again.
Loved this dish. Did not have provolone so I used some shredded Mexican & some 4 cheese slices, really good.
So glad you enjoyed it Robin!
Making this for super bowl today! Made meat, veggies cheese mixture ahead and will reward when ready. Really delicious. My husband is very excited for this meal!
Thank you so much for the 5 star rating Shelley!
I made these sloppy joes and they were delicious. I followed the recipe word for word. I toasted the buns after spreading butter on both top and bottom of sliced rolls using “broil” on my oven. Husband said this is a keeper. It made enough for another meal and still had some left. So I took the remaining sloppy joe mixture and buns to my sister’s. She went crazy over these sandwiches. Will definitely add this recipe to my personal treasured recipe box.
How awesome! I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
It was so easy and so delicious. My husband who is really picky just loved it. Glad my daughter and I found this site. I love trying and making new recipes. Since my daughter works from home I try something new all the time. I love cooking!
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
These were amazing! My whole family loves them and even had seconds! Will make again!
Wow! IOriginally saved on FB the stuffed shelled version but since I had everything on hand for the sloppy joe version I did that. Made this last night and the only substitution I made because of the comments (about being bland) was to use a packet of Au Jus. For lunch leftovers today, I picked up a baguette for more substance of a bread and made another packet of Au Jus so I could have the leftover sloppy joe mixture as a French dip. Amazing.
That sounds fantastic! Glad you enjoyed it!
This might be a silly question but I am dying to make these. Is a cast iron skillet 100% necessary? We don’t have one :/
It’s not necessary, you could use any other skillet. I just prefer a cast iron because I like the deep crust that it creates while browning the meat.
Made this tonight & we really enjoyed it! I added fresh garlic along with the gp, onion, & mushrooms. Thanks for introducing us to brioche buns!?
You’re welcome!
When I came across your recipe, I KNEW I would love it. It’s a classic twist on traditional Sloppy Joe’s but with the goodness of a Philly Cheesesteak! My husband was skeptical about it but I told him I was going to make it, anyway, because I knew your recipe would be foolproof. As I was cooking everything together yesterday, he kept going on about how delicious everything smelled, and sure enough, when I finished cooking and assembled the Sloppy Joe’s, it was pure perfection! My husband, who is a very picky eater, went on about how amazing the Sloppy Joe’s tasted. He brought leftovers for lunch and said it tasted even better today!I’m really surprised in reading comments about how bland others found it to taste. What I made was bursting with just the right amount of flavor without being overwhelming. I even added a few cloves of garlic, just because we love garlic so much. Thank you for this fantastic recipe! This will definitely be a permanent staple in our dinner rotation!
I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it, Sara! Thanks for coming back to let me know!
I CAN NOT wait to make this!!! I love Philly Cheese steak anyway you make it so I know that I’m going to LOVE this!! Thank you so very much for the recipes on here!!! I CANT WAIT!!!!!!! 🙂
Delicious is a understatement and a half!!!!!
Fantastic!! So glad you enjoyed it Joann!
Added a red pepper and deleted the salt. Will make again
I am giving you 5 stars, and I haven’ t made the recipe. Cooking is my passion. One look at the photo said YES. Make it.
Haha, love it!!
What would the carbs be on this without a bun? I’m currently on a low carb restriction. Looks amazing!
Sorry I don’t have the nutritional facts for recipes on the site but I know there are a lot of free resources on the internet from when I’ve cooked for clients with low calorie diets.
I hope you enjoy it!
