Chef’s Note

I prefer my bananas to be very ripe when making this recipe. It adds to the sweetness and creaminess of the overall drink. I’ll make sure to have plenty of frozen sliced bananas on hand so I can make this at the drop of a hat.

Can this be made ahead of time?

You can absolutely make this the night before, and store it in the fridge overnight to enjoy the next day. This is a perfect option if you want a quick meal on your way to work.
If you prefer that the smoothie stay thick and frozen, you can store it in a sealed freezer-friendly container overnight. The only downside with this option is that you won’t be able to drink it immediately because it will need some time to thaw.

How to Store

  • Serve: Enjoy fresh before it has a chance to melt.
  • Store: If you prefer making it in advance, you can cover the glass and keep the smoothie cold in the fridge for up to 48 hours.
  • Freeze: You can freeze this recipe for up to 3 months.

Variations

  • Berries or tropical fruit: Try adding frozen strawberries, or add other frozen berries like blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. For a tropical blend try fruits like pineapple, mango, and oranges.
  • Vegan: To make this recipe for a vegan diet, use a non-dairy milk substitute like coconut, almond, oat, or rice milk. You’ll also want to replace the honey with a vegan sweetener like coconut or beet sugar.
  • Spinach Banana smoothie: Blend a few handfuls of fresh spinach into the recipe. The banana and honey flavor makes it so that you hardly taste the leafy greens.
  • Sweeteners: Instead of honey, you could add coconut sugar, maple syrup, or agave nectar to this recipe.
  • Extra thick: If you prefer a thicker consistency, add a few spoonfuls of yogurt. Plain vanilla yogurt or Greek yogurt are the most common options.
  • Protein options: To add a protein boost, you can blend in a few spoonfuls of whey protein, flax seeds, hemp seeds, peanut butter, or almond butter.
