Chef’s Note

Keep the heat at medium-low to low, and avoid letting the wine come to a full boil. Gentle heating and simmering allows the spices and orange slices to infuse the wine without evaporating too much of the alcohol.

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes, this is a convenient option for holiday gatherings, where you can simply reheat and serve. Reheat on the stove top, or throw it in the slow cooker while you prepare all your other party dishes.

How to Store

  • Store: Keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Also, let it cool completely before transferring to a sealed container.
  • Store: To reheat, gently warm on the stove over low heat, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let it boil.
  • Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight, and reheat slowly on low on the stove top.

Frequent Questions

What kind of wine should you use for Mulled Wine?

A dry red wine with moderate to high tannins is best, as it will hold up well to the warm spices and sweetness of the added ingredients. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Red Zinfandel, or Syrah are all great options because they are dark and full bodied.

Why is it called mulled wine?

The term “mulled” comes from the Old English word “mull,” which means to heat, sweeten, and flavor a drink. Mulled wine is a spiced, warm wine that is heated and sweetened with honey or sugar and flavored with a variety of spices, making it a perfect example of a mulled drink.

Can I make Mulled Wine in the slow cooker?

Yes, add everything except half the oranges and the juice to the slow cooker, then cover and cook on low for 1.5-2 hours, making sure the beverage doesn’t boil. Right before serving, add the remaining slices and juice and keep on the warm setting to serve for parties.
