Sabrina’s Broiled Steak Recipe

You’re going to love my surprisingly simple Broiled Steak recipe. It’s easy to make, tasty to eat, and with a few homemade sides will make a dazzling dinner for a special event or any weeknight meal. While preparing this delicious meal, you can make equally easy and tasty side dishes to pair with the Broiled Ribeye Steak.

Because steak dinners are often saved for special occasions, it’s easy to feel pressure to make it an amazing meal. Fortunately, making a beautiful ribeye steak is easier than ever with this broiling method. You’ll just preheat the broiler, add the steak to a cast iron skillet, and cook until it reaches your preferred level of doneness. It couldn’t be easier, and the result is a beautiful steak with perfectly tender meat.

Ingredients

  • 2 Ribeye Steaks: For this recipe, I opted to use 2 boneless rib eye steaks. This cut of meat crisps up nicely on the outside, creating a crustlike outer layer, while the inside stays flavorful and succulent, so it’s perfect for broiling. You could also broil tenderloin, strip steak, or flank steak if that’s what you have.
  • Seasonings: You’ll be amazed at just how flavorful this recipe turns out with such simple ingredients. To season the steak, all I used was vegetable oil, kosher salt, and black pepper. You can use avocado oil if preferred. While the ingredients are quite straightforward, they do a great job enhancing the natural, meaty flavors you want in steak. But, you can also feel free to experiment with different seasonings to add variants to the flavor.

How to Make Broiled Steak

Time needed: 25 minutes.

  1. Prepare Oven Broiler

To start, preheat broiler. Then place the cast iron skillet in the oven so that the pan can preheat. You’ll also want to take the cuts of steak out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature before starting.

  2. Prepare Steaks

Pat steaks dry with a paper towel. Then rub dry steaks with vegetable oil and season the meat with salt and pepper.Broiled Steaks two raw steaks on plate and portioned ingredients in prep bowls.

  3. Broil Steak

Carefully remove the preheated skillet from the oven and add the steak to the pan. Then place it back on the top oven rack. You want the oven rack about 6-8 inches away from the heating element. Broil the steak for 3 minutes. Then turn the meat over and continue the cooking time for another 2 minutes. Lower the heat to 450 degrees. Continue the cooking process until you reach the doneness you like. For rare, you’ll want to cook another 3-4 minutes, 5-6 minutes for medium, and 7-8 minutes for well done.two raw ribeyes on skillet

  4. Check the Temperature

You can also use an instant-read thermometer to check the internal temperature for the doneness you want. For food safety guidelines, you want to cook the rare steak to at least 125 degrees. The medium steak will be between 140 and 150. Well-done steak should be around 160 degrees.

  5. Finish

Make sure to give the Broiled Steak 5 minutes of resting time before serving. Letting the steak rest allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in more succulent and delicious meat. When serving the meal, enjoy it with classic side dishes. It also tastes delicious, topped with flavored butter like garlic butter or Blue Cheese Butter to add some more delicious flavor.Broiled Steaks 2 finished Broiled Steak on plate

Can These Be Made Ahead?

Steaks are best made and served immediately. You can make them and store them in the fridge overnight and reheat on the stovetop or air fryer.

What to Serve with Steak

Classic sides like Mashed Potatoes, Dinner Rolls, and Stick of Butter Rice taste amazing with this Broiled Steak recipe. I also love adding a serving of crispy veggies like Sauteed Green Beans or Mushrooms. Any type of sauteed vegetable is a great pairing with this option because you can quickly prepare the side on the stovetop while the steak is cooking in the oven.

How to Store

  • Store: Don’t leave this recipe at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or the meat will start to go bad. To keep the leftover steak fresh, let it cool completely, then put the steak pieces in an airtight container or cover it tightly in aluminum foil. Broiled Steak can stay good for 3-4 days in your fridge. To reheat the steak, place it on a rimmed baking sheet, and turn your oven to low. Put the steak in the preheated oven until heated through.
  • Freeze: You can also put the steak in a freezer bag or another airtight container to keep in your freezer. Frozen steak can keep well for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to reheat the frozen steak, you can do it in the oven just like you’d typically reheat steak. You’ll just need to heat the meat longer so that it has time to thaw and heat all the way.

Alternative Cooking Methods

Instant Pot Steak

Another quick and easy cooking method to prepare succulent ribeye steak is using an Instant Pot. Here are the simple steps to adjust this recipe for an instant pot:

  1. Pat the steak dry with paper towels. Then add oil and seasoning to the dry steaks.
  2. Set the instant pot to saute mode and add olive oil to the pot.
  3. Add the steaks to the pot once the oil is heated. Sear the meat for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  4. Press cancel on the instant pot and use tongs to remove the steak. Set the steak to the side.
  5. Pour 1 cup of water into the pot and use a wooden spoon to deglaze the bottom.
  6. Then place a trivet in the instant pot, and place the steaks in the trivet.
  7. Close the instant pot and seal the vent. Then pressure cook the steak.
  8. Cook on high for 3 minutes for medium rare or up to 12 minutes for a well-done steak.
  9. After pressure cooking, turn the valve to vent to release the pressure.
  10. Then remove the steak from the pot. Allow steaks to rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving the delicious meal.

Frequent Questions

What do you need to broil steak?

For the best results, I broiled the steaks in a cast iron skillet. You can also use an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet if you don’t have a large enough pan for the steaks.

Why does broiling steak work?

Broiling cooks the steak cooks with the heat source from above and does it quickly at a much higher temperature. Because of the high temperature and the heated pan, the outside of the steak will brown and become crispy while the juices stay locked inside. The result is a tender, juicy middle and deliciously crisp outer layer.

How long should you broil steaks?

As you’ll see in the directions, you’ll only broil the steak for 3 minutes. This will do the initial searing of the meat. Then you’ll want to turn the oven temperature down to 450 degrees and continue cooking as the temperature lowers. The length of cooking time depends on how well done you like your steak.

Variations

  • Steak seasoning: This Broiled Steak recipe is very simple and only uses salt and pepper for seasoning. However, you can feel free to add other spices and herbs to flavor the meat how you like. Ground paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, fresh parsley, basil, or cayenne pepper would all make delicious alterations to this simple dish.
  • Steak Marinade: For an extra flavorful and juicy Broiled Steak, you can marinate the meat before cooking. My Steak Marinade Recipe is an easy mix of ingredients that works well for any steak recipe. You’ll see that the recipe calls for soy sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, dried basil, and white pepper. You can stick to that original recipe or use it as a starting point and experiment with other classic marinade ingredients like red wine, balsamic vinegar, or apple cider vinegar. You can also add different seasonings to alter the flavor of the marinade however you like.
