Grilled Cheese Sandwiches have always been a kid’s favorite recipe, and they have a nostalgic place for many grownups. Using the four-cheese blend adds just enough more complex flavor to make it more interesting for adults to enjoy too. This is an extra cheesy twist on a classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich. It’s the perfect Sandwich Recipe to enjoy for an easy lunch or as part of a comforting, kid-friendly dinner dish.

Sabrina’s Ultimate Four Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe

My recipe takes the classic comfort food Grilled Cheese sandwiches and adds more complex flavors by using four different varieties of cheese. The cheese blend in this Grilled Cheese recipe is made with four kinds of cheese. It’s a cheddar, provolone, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese blend. It’s a great combination of nutty, sharp, and more mild cheeses. During the grilling time, all of them melt into amazing gooey cheese. You’ll be able to see all that elastic, stringy, melty, goodness when you pull your sandwich apart!

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted Butter: This is used to grill the bread to perfection.
  • 8 slices Thick Sandwich Bread: The perfect base for this sandwich is using thick slices of bread. I’m using white bread. The soft pieces of bread toast up easily so that they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
  • 4 slices Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar gives the Grilled Cheese a bold, traditional cheesy flavor. It’s up to you if you want to use sharp cheddar cheese or a more mild flavor.
  • 4 slices Provolone Cheese: Provolone is a more neutral cheese that balances out the other rich cheeses with its simple, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor. If you don’t have provolone you can substitute it with another mild cheese like Swiss or Gouda.
  • 4 slices Mozzarella Cheese: This is a white cheese with a mild flavor that’s perfect for melting.
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese: Shredded parmesan brings in sharper cheese flavor. If you don’t have Parmesan you can substitute it with another hard cheese like shredded Asiago.

Kitchen Tools and Equipment

  • Griddle or Large Skillet: This is needed for cooking the Grilled Cheese to a golden, crispy perfection. Make sure it’s big enough for four slices so you can cook everything at the same time.
  • Butter Knife or Spreader: This is will be used for putting the butter on the bread. If the kids are helping, you have them use a spoon to smear the butter on.

How to Make Ultimate Grilled Cheese

Time needed: 15 minutes.

  1. Toast

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Then add half of them to a griddle or large nonstick skillet with the butter side facing down towards the griddle. Make sure the heat setting is at medium heat or medium-low heat. If you make it too hot, the outside of the sandwich will burn before the cheese filling is melted.slices of buttered bread

  2. Add Cheese

Start by adding the cheddar cheese slices to each piece of bread. Then top that with provolone, mozzarella, and parmesan.four slices of bread and cheese on skillet

  3. Grill and Finish

Add the second slice of bread to each sandwich with the butter side up. Press down gently on the top slice. Cook for another 2 minutes, then flip and cook for 4 minutes, until the cheese is melty and the bread is toasted.for grilled cheese on skillet

Grilling Tips & Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks to make the perfect grilled cheese every time. Feel free to share your own tips and tricks for making the perfect grilled cheese sandwiches in the comments below!

  • Even Butter Distribution: To get the perfect golden, crispy exterior on your grilled cheese sandwiches, make sure to spread the butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  • Low to Medium Heat: While cooking the sandwiches, use low to medium heat to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese has a chance to melt.
  • Pressing Down Gently: When cooking the sandwiches, gently press down on them with a spatula or press to help flatten them slightly which will help them cook evenly and the cheese to melt perfectly.

How to Store

  • Store: You shouldn’t leave Grilled Cheese Sandwiches at room temperature for more than 2 hours. These sandwiches are best fresh. However, if you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge. Let the pieces of bread and cheese filling cool to room temperature then wrap them in plastic wrap. They’ll be good for 1-2 days.
  • Reheating Tips: Reheat the sandwich in a toaster oven or on a hot skillet.
  • Freezing: It’s not recommended to freeze grilled cheese, but to make them and serve them fresh.

Variations

  • Cream Cheese: For a rich, tangy taste you can add cream cheese to the sandwich. Simply mix together ¾ cup mayonnaise with 3 ounces of softened cream cheese. Then spread the mixture over the inside of the bread before toasting and adding the cheeses.
  • Cheese Garlic Grilled Cheese: You can also spread garlic butter over the inside of each piece of bread. To make your own garlic butter mixture combine ¼ cup softened butter, 1 minced garlic clove, and 1 tablespoon parsley. Mix the ingredients together and spread the creamy butter over the bread before toasting.
  • Bread: We’ve just used classic sandwich bread in this recipe, however, there are other options you can try for this delicious comfort food. For soft bread, try slices of sourdough bread, challah, or brioche. For more crusty bread, Italian bread or French bread would taste great.
  • Cheese Mixture: You can also experiment with your choice of cheese in the recipe. Instead of regular cheddar, you could use white cheddar cheese. American cheese, Swiss cheese, or Monterey Jack do a great job melting into a wonderfully butter and stringy texture. For a more smoky flavor, you could also use gouda.
  • Caramelized Onions: Slice half an onion into thin slices and cook them on medium-high heat in a tablespoon of butter on the stovetop for about 5 minutes until they caramelize. Scoop a tablespoon of the caramelized onions into the sandwich just before serving. Adults love this!
