I’ve made so many delicious variations on the traditional hot chocolate recipe, including Peppermint Hot Chocolate, and Hot Chocolate Bombs. This white chocolate version has a vanilla twist on the typical Drink Recipe.

Chef’s Note

When heating up these ingredients, it’s very important that you don’t let the milk and heavy cream come to a full boil. Doing so can scorch the milk, and can also make the white chocolate chips become grainy when overheated. Keep stirring frequently as the chips melt into the milk to help make everything smooth.

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare everything as directed, leaving the toppings and garnishes off for later. Once made, let it cool, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 days. When you’re ready to serve, gently reheat in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring frequently until hot and smooth.

How to Store

  • Serve: Enjoy while it’s hot. Don’t leave this recipe out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
  • Store: Pour the leftovers into an airtight container to store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a saucepan on the stovetop, in the microwave, or in your slow cooker.
  • Freeze: You can freeze this drink recipe. Be sure not to freeze it in a glass container as the dairy ingredients will expand when frozen and can fracture the glass. To reheat, let it thaw in the fridge, then reheat on the stovetop or in the slow cooker. Be sure to mix the ingredients again, as they may separate throughout this process, and stir frequently while heating.

Frequent Questions

Can I add coffee to this?

Yes, if you want to make this into a coffee recipe, reduce the amount of hot chocolate you’re making, and brew fresh coffee. Fill the mugs partway with coffee, then add the white chocolate over the top and stir to combine. Add more or less coffee to the mixture depending on how strong of a flavor you want.

Can I make this in an Instant Pot?

Yes. To make this recipe in the instant pot, set your pot to sauté mode. Add the milk and heavy cream and continue to heat until barely bubbling. Add the white chocolate and continue to heat until the chocolate melts. Mix the ingredients together, then add the salt and vanilla to finish the recipe.

Can I use white chocolate bars?

Yes. Instead of chips, you can use melting discs, bars, or chunks. It’s not important what kind of white chocolate you use, as long as you like the flavor because it makes up a majority of what the finished drink tastes like.
