Homemade popsicles are wonderful for enjoying in your backyard after a BBQ, sharing by the pool, or having after a long, hot day. My Homemade Popsicle recipe uses real fruit, coconut milk, yogurt, and honey for the perfect blend of sweet, tart, and creamy ingredients.

Why make Homemade Popsicles?

There are so many reasons to try these Homemade Popsicles instead of getting store-bought popsicles. Making the popsicles yourself means you can try out a variety of different fresh fruit flavors according to your taste. You can also avoid a lot of preservatives and highly processed sweeteners that you usually come across in store-bought popsicles. Plus, making your own popsicles is a fun summer activity that you can do with your family.

Homemade Popsicles ingredients spread out in separate prep bowls.

Ingredients

Tropical Popsicles:

  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks: Mangoes are perfect for creating tart and sweet frozen treats. You can purchase frozen mango pieces, or slice and freeze a fresh mango to use in the simple ingredients.
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks: Along with the mango, add frozen pineapple chunks for a beach, tropical blend.
  • 1 frozen banana: Make sure your banana is very ripe before slicing and freezing. The banana adds extra fruit flavor and thickens the popsicle mix.
  • ¼ cup whole-fat coconut milk: Coconut milk is a creamy liquid ingredient that adds another layer to the delicious tropical flavors in this homemade fruit popsicle. Be sure to use whole-fat coconut milk to give the fruit blend a rich and velvety consistency.
  • ¼ cup orange juice: Add orange juice for extra sweet, citrus flavor and to thin out the puree into a smooth, pourable consistency.
  • ¼ cup vanilla yogurt: Regular or Greek yogurt is perfect for enriching the flavor and giving the popsicles a dreamy, creamy consistency.

Strawberry Popsicles:

  • 3 cups frozen strawberries, or fresh: For the Strawberry Popsicles, I kept things simple with just 3 cups of strawberries to add the amazing fresh fruit flavor and pink color to the popsicle blend.
  • ¾ cup vanilla yogurt: Blend the strawberries into vanilla yogurt to make a rich, creamy blend. You can use regular or Greek yogurt, depending on your preference.
  • 4 tablespoons honey: Sweeten the mixture with a few spoonfuls of honey for a natural sweetener. I prefer using honey over granulated sugar because the liquid sweetener mixes more easily into the pureed fruit.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract: Enrich the mixture with a couple of teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Blueberry Popsicles:

  • 3 cups frozen blueberries or fresh: Most of the ingredients in the strawberry and blueberry popsicles are the same apart from the fruit. Blend fresh or frozen blueberries to make delicious blueberry-flavored popsicles.
  • ¾ cup vanilla yogurt: Thicken the fruit puree into a silky blend with regular vanilla yogurt or vanilla Greek yogurt.
  • 4 tablespoons honey: Sweeten with honey.
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice: Enhance the fresh, sweet, and tangy blueberry flavor with fresh lemon juice.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract: Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to enhance the vanilla flavor of the creamy yogurt base.

Kitchen Tools & Equipment

  • Blender: Use a high-power counter blender to quickly puree the frozen fruit mixture until smooth. A 48-ounce or larger will work well for this recipe.
  • Popsicle molds: Use popsicle molds to hold the liquid and form the popsicles into a classic shape as they freeze.
  • Popsicle sticks: If your popsicle molds don’t already include reusable sticks, place wooden popsicle sticks in the center of the mold.

Can this be made ahead of time?

This is a perfect make-ahead recipe. To make fruit popsicles ahead of time, follow the recipe instructions and let the popsicles set in the molds for at least 3 hours in the freezer. Once the popsicles are completely frozen, you can remove them from the molds and place them in freezer bags to keep them sealed in the freezer for up to 6 weeks before serving.

Homemade Popsicle Tips & Tricks

These quick hints will help you to make the perfect popsicle mixture and freeze them into fresh and delicious popsicles with no problem!

  1. Use frozen fruit
    • You can use fresh or frozen fruit in this recipe. However, I recommend opting for frozen fruit if possible. The frozen fruit not only keeps the mixture chilled, but it also adds ice crystals, which create a velvety, frothy texture.
  2. How to remove popsicles from the molds
    • To easily remove the popsicles from the mold without them sticking, run the popsicle mold under hot water for about 5 seconds. The warm water will lightly melt the outer layer of the popsicles, so that you can easily slip them from the mold. If the popsicles are still stuck, just run them under warm water for another few seconds until they slip out.

What to Pair With Fruit Popsicles

Drinks: Hosting a summer party? Try serving these fun fruit popsicles along with chilled Strawberry Lemonade. Or, pick a boozy drink like Sangria or Mojitos

Snacks: Homemade Popsicles make a refreshing dessert or snack. You can eat your popsicle along with other snack foods like fresh fruit, nuts, or Granola Bars for a more filling, healthy treat.

How to Store

Store: You can keep Homemade Popsicles frozen for 1-2 months. Make sure the popsicles are entirely frozen, and then place them in a freezer bag or another airtight container to keep sealed in your freezer until ready to serve.

Serve: To make the ice-cold popsicles easier to bite into, let them soften for a minute or two at room temperature before eating. But be sure not to leave them too long, or they’ll quickly melt.

Alternative Techniques

Ice cube tray popsicles: If you don’t have popsicle molds, you can make mini homemade popsicles by pouring the popsicle mixture into ice cube trays or muffin tins and adding popsicle sticks to the center.

Frequent Questions

How long will homemade popsicles last?

As long as you store the popsicles in an airtight container, they can keep well for about 6 weeks.

How do you make homemade popsicles creamy?

Adding ingredients like yogurt and coconut milk will help make the fruit mixture smooth and keep it nice and creamy as it freezes. This prevents the popsicles from becoming too hard and icy.
