Ingredients

  • ¾ Cup Mayonnaise: For the most part, Pub Sauce is made with popular pantry items, and you’ll probably have most or all of the ingredients ready to go. Mayonnaise is the perfect base for the recipe because of its creamy consistency. Plus, its mild flavor profile lets the other bold ingredients shine.
  • 1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar: Adding a tablespoon of brown sugar balances out the smoky and slightly spicy ingredients with a rich, sweet taste.
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce: The Worcestershire sauce is essential to giving the sauce its distinct smoky, umami flavor. If you don’t have Worcestershire, you could substitute 2 tablespoons soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, or steak sauce in a pinch.
  • Spices: Finish the recipe off by adding in a blend of spices. You’ll use 1 teaspoon each of onion powder and garlic powder, ½ teaspoon pepper, and ¼ teaspoon paprika to season the sauce.

  • Medium Mixing Bowl: Grab a bowl large enough to hold all your ingredients, plus room to whisk them together. If you use a mixing bowl with a lid, you won’t need anything else to cover your sauce. Otherwise, you’ll also need some plastic wrap to use as a cover.
  • Whisk: Use your favorite whisk to fully combine all of the sauce ingredients and spices.

Variations

  • Pub Style Horseradish Sauce: To add a burst of horseradish flavor to the sauce, you can stir ¼ cup horseradish into the mixture. Then spoon the pub-style horseradish flavor over your favorite steak recipe for a bold, tangy steak sauce.
  • Fresh Garlic: If you prefer using fresh garlic, you can replace the garlic powder with minced garlic cloves. We only used 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, which means you’ll want even less minced garlic. Typically, the conversion is ⅛ the amount of fresh garlic as garlic powder. So, only add a pinch. If you like a more robust garlic flavor, you can add to your preference.
  • More Sauce Flavors: You can flavor sauce with a variety of different ingredients. Try whisking in a tablespoon soy sauce, BBQ sauce, or honey to experiment with the taste. If you want to make Pub Sauce a bit spicy, you could also add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture.
  • Sour Cream: For a tangier sauce flavor, you can replace the mayonnaise with sour cream. Another option is to both by mixing half mayonnaise and half sour cream.
