Chef’s Note

Sometimes when I want to add a more complex flavor profile to this drink, I mix things up by using gin instead of vodka. Gin has a slightly stronger aroma and citrus flavor, whereas vodka is relatively flavorless. Sometimes, when hosting, I have both liquors as options so guests can choose whether they prefer the simpler flavor of vodka or the complex aromatic flavor of gin.

Can this be made ahead of time?

Yes, especially if you’re preparing this cocktail for a party or large group. You can make a pitcher 1-2 days in advance rather than making each cocktail individually.

  • Add 6 cups of grapefruit juice and 3 cups of vodka to a large pitcher.
  • Add grapefruit or lime slices over top to garnish.
  • To serve, fill a large plate with coarse salt and wet all the cocktail glass rims. Then salt the edge of each glass.
  • Fill your glasses with ice, pour the cocktail over the top, and enjoy.

How to Store

  • Serve: When making homemade cocktails, they taste best served fresh. Don’t leave it out at room temperature for more than an hour, since the ice will melt and water down your drink.
  • Store: Kept covered or sealed in an airtight container, the grapefruit and vodka mixture can stay good in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Keep in mind that the quality of the cocktail will decrease the longer you keep it stored. If you made the cocktail ahead of time, it’s best to pour it over ice and enjoy it within a day or two.
  • Freeze: You could try to freeze this, but it’s best kept refrigerated, or made fresh.

Variations

  • Sweet and Salty: Mix sanding sugar with the sea salt for a sugar and salt rim. Or add a dash of simple syrup to the recipe and sweeten the actual mixture.
  • Strawberry: Start by adding fresh strawberries to the bottom of your mixing glass, and muddle strawberries to release juice. Add the ice, vodka, and grapefruit juice to the glass, and stir or shake. Strain the mixture into a prepared cocktail glass and garnish with fresh strawberries.
  • More berry flavors: Muddle raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries to add different kinds of fruit flavors to the recipe. Carefully strain the mixture to remove the seeds from the mixture.
  • Sour: Along with the grapefruit juice in the recipe, you could also add a splash of fresh lemon or lime juice for some extra citrus flavor. Garnish the glass with a lime slice or lemon slice to finish.
  • Rosemary: Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig. Leave the sprig in the drink as you sip on it so it can release its aromatic flavors.
