Sabrina’s Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe

Delicious smoothie recipes like this one make it easy to enjoy healthy servings of fruit all year round. During the Spring and Summer, when fruit is fresh, you can freeze strawberries and bananas in bulk. Then have flavorful frozen fruit to make your favorite smoothie all fall and winter long. You can also easily run to the grocery store to get a bag of frozen fruit to make this recipe.

This Strawberry Banana Smoothie comes together in under 5 minutes. All you have to do is add the fruit, yogurt, and milk to a blender and blend until smooth. The finished drink is fruity, chilled, sweet, and creamy.

Chef’s Note: More Filling Smoothies

While I love a quick smoothie for a drink, sometimes I like to make them a bit more filling to have as a whole meal. Adding healthy ingredients like quick oats, nuts, chia seeds or nut butter add protein and fiber to bulk them up. You can also add some protein powder in a flavor that goes with strawberry banana. One of my favorite combinations is chocolate protein powder and a tablespoon of almond butter. It’s protein packed, filling, and tastes like a chocolate peanut butter and jelly milkshake!

Ingredients

  • 1 Banana: To make enough Strawberry Banana Smoothie for two glasses, you’ll want 1 whole banana or 1 cup of sliced bananas. Use pre-frozen fruit from the grocery store’s frozen section or freeze fresh bananas ahead of making this smoothie recipe. Bananas add flavor, potassium, and their thick texture makes the creamiest smoothie recipe.
  • 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries: For the perfect balance of flavor, use equal parts strawberries and bananas in this recipe. If you’re freezing your own strawberries, be sure to remove the tops before freezing the ripe strawberries. Frozen strawberries and bananas make for a delicious pink smoothie with plenty of sweet fruity flavor.
  • Dairy Ingredients: Like many smoothie recipes, this one will include a combination of ½ cup milk and ½ cup vanilla yogurt. The milk acts as the primary liquid ingredient while the vanilla yogurt helps to thicken the mixture and adds sweet flavor. If you’re trying to reduce fat in the recipe, you can use skim milk and low-fat yogurt.
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar: The strawberries and bananas already add natural sweetness to this smoothie recipe. However, mixing in 2 tablespoons of sugar helps make the drink more pleasant and energizing. You can add less or no sugar if you prefer.

Kitchen Tools & Equipment

  • Blender: You’ll use a good, strong blender to combine all the ingredients and turn everything into a smooth, frothy beverage. Any blender that can handle blending ice would work just fine for this recipe. If you don’t have a blender, you could also use a food processor.
  • Measuring Cup: Use a measuring cup to ensure you have equal parts Banana and Berries, and equal parts milk and yogurt.

Can I make smoothies in advance?

Yes. Smoothies make a great recipe for meal prepping. You can double up the batch to make four smoothies in total and freeze all or some of them for later. If you want to make even more smoothies, you may need to work in batches depending on the size of your blender. You can also add different fruit to separate batches to mix up the flavors.

Pour the meal-prepped smoothies into serving-sized, freezer-safe containers with about 1-inch headspace at the top. Then you can freeze the delicious smoothie recipe for up to 3 months. Transfer one smoothie to the fridge at a time to defrost and serve for the perfect meal-prepped breakfast or snack recipe.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Make Smoothie-stand worthy drinks at home by following these helpful tips.

  1. Use Only Frozen Fruits
    • One of the ways this Smoothie recipe results in a thick, frosty, cold drink is by blending frozen fruits. Make sure you blend your fruits straight out of the freezer, rather than defrosting or using fresh fruits.
  2. Blend Thoroughly
    • Check the consistency of your Smoothie before you serve it. Sometimes it might look like it is fully blended, but when you drink it there are too many frozen chunks in your glass. Use a spoon to test it and see if there are chunks before you pour. If you see chunks, keep on blending!

What to Pair With a Fruit Smoothie

Enjoy a delicious Smoothie for breakfast along with some protein and whole grains like eggs and toast. Take your smoothie on the go with a Breakfast Burrito or Sandwich. Have some tasty baked goods to go with your smoothie like Blueberry Crumb Muffins or Scones with different mix-ins. Smoothies also make delicious afternoon snacks, desserts, or sides to enjoy with lunch.

How to Store

  • Serve: You’ll get the best taste and texture, serving this frozen drink fresh out of the blender. Be sure not to leave the smoothie recipe sitting out for more than 2 hours.
  • Store: If you have leftovers, you can cover the Strawberry Banana Smoothie in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for 1-2 days. Add the smoothie mixture back to the blender, and blend in a handful of ice to return it to its frozen, frothy consistency before serving.
  • Freeze: You can also freeze your Smoothie recipe in mason jars or another airtight container. Just make sure to leave enough space at the top so that the smoothie can expand. Kept properly sealed, the frozen smoothie can keep well for up 3 months. Place the recipe in the fridge overnight to defrost before serving.

Frequent Questions

Can I use fresh fruit instead of frozen for smoothies?

Although fresh fruit will give you a similar flavor, it won’t create the same thick consistency as frozen fruit. You can blend in ice cubes to thicken and chill the smoothie mixture when using fresh fruit. However, as the ice melts, it will water down the drink. So, while you can use fresh fruit, it’s not as good of an option as frozen fruit.

How do I freeze fresh fruit?

If you have fresh strawberries and bananas that you want to use in your smoothie, you can freeze the fresh fruit ahead of making the recipe. To freeze strawberries for a smoothie, first, rinse them under cold water and let them dry completely. Hull the strawberries and slice them in half to make them easier to blend. Peel the ripe bananas and slice them into pieces. Place the fresh fruit in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze flat for 1-2 hours until the fruit hardens. Transfer the frozen fruit to a ziplock freezer bag to keep in the freezer until you’re ready to make a homemade Strawberry Banana Smoothie.

Are Strawberry Banana Smoothies healthy?

How healthy your smoothie is depends on the additional ingredients you put in with the fruit. The bananas and strawberries in the recipe provide plenty of important nutrients, such as potassium, Vitamin C, folate, fiber, and antioxidants. On top of that, whole milk and vanilla yogurt provide protein and calcium. You can make the recipe even healthier by adding in extra protein, leafy greens, or other healthful options.

Variations

  • Vegan Strawberry Banana Smoothie: To make your Strawberry Banana Smoothie recipe vegan, you’ll need to swap out the regular milk for a dairy-free milk alternative. Almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, or soy milk are all good non-dairy milk options. If you don’t want milk at all, you can make a sweeter smoothie by using fruit juice like orange juice or apple juice to replace the milk. To make an entirely dairy-free smoothie, you’ll also need to use dairy-free yogurt. If you want, you can also swap the white sugar for a vegan sweetener like maple syrup, agave nectar, or coconut sugar.
  • Fruit Options: You can make your creamy smoothie recipe with a variety of different frozen fruits. Try adding other types of frozen berries like raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and cherries. You can also try other kinds of fruit, like peaches, apples, kiwis, and mangoes.
  • Protein Add-Ins: Want to make this delicious Strawberry Banana Smoothie the perfect pre-workout drink? Try adding protein-rich ingredients like peanut butter, almond butter, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds, oatmeal, or protein powder.
  • Spinach Strawberry Banana Smoothie: An easy way to add extra vitamins and minerals to your favorite smoothie ingredients is by blending in a handful of green spinach. The spinach adds a slightly bitter flavor but doesn’t overpower the sweet strawberry and banana mixture, so you’ll get a classic smoothie flavor with more of a health boost.
