Spice Rack – If you buy spices in bulk from local grocers or from Penzey’s, it’s less expensive and significantly higher quality than buying the jars individually. This spice rack helps to keep from ending up being left with tons of little bags of spices.

HOW TO STORE SLOW COOKER HAM AND POTATO SOUP

  • Serve: Don’t leave your Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup out for longer than about 2 hours before putting it away. If you leave it out too long the soup will start to grow bacteria that can make you sick.
  • Store: Always allow the soup to cool to room temperature before you put it in the fridge. In a sealable container, the Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup can last about 3 days. After that, it’s time to throw it out and make more.
  • Freeze: Unfortunately, it is not recommended to freeze creamy soups such as this, because the sour cream and milk will separate and create a grainy texture when defrosted.

Ingredients
 

  • 8 cups russet potatoes , diced
  • 1 yellow onion , diced
  • 2 large carrots , peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 16 ounces Cubed Ham
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream , (you can also substitute whole milk)
  • ½ cup sour cream

Instructions

  • Add the potatoes, onion, carrot, celery, ham, Kosher salt, pepper chicken broth to your slow cooker and cook on low 7-8 hours, or high 4-5 hours.
  • Using a potato masher, mash about ⅓ of the potatoes (don't worry the ham won't really mash that much)
  • Add the flour, heavy cream/milk and sour cream and stir everything together.
  • Cover and cook on high for an additional 15 minutes.

  7. I’ve made your recipe many times and our family loves it! I was recently diagnosed celiac. Do you think I could use cornstarch in place of the flour as a thickener? Or should I try a gluten free flour? I worry about the taste being altered.

      1. I tried this recipe for the first time and it came out delicious! Super easy to make. I added cheese to mine because I put it in practically everything and it took the soup up a notch!! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better! Thanks for the recipe. Going in my book as a fav!?

    2. I used gluten free flour and had no problems. I’ve made it with regular flour and honestly it tastes better with gluten free.

    3. My husband is sensitive to both corn and wheat. I have thickened this with a 1:1 GF flour blend (King Arthur is what I had on hand, but I don’t think it would matter too much what brand) both times, and it has turned out great!

  11. This recipe is a must try! The only things I changed was I used a little less ham, then added about 8 strips of crumbled up (crispy) bacon, then threw in about a tablespoon of origional (green top) Dan-o’s seasoning….WINNER! 10/10 recommended

  12. I’ve been making this recipe for several years! I don’t eat pork but the recipe is just as delicious without it! I have made it with smoked turkey and turkey ham. Sometimes I add a can of white beans! It’s easy!!!

  14. This is one of the best soups I have ever made! So easy. I left for work and when I came home I finished it off. I did add about 3/4 cups of cheddar cheese. Really easy and really good!

  15. I have made this soup many times. I use yellow and orange carrots in it. I also added celery leaves, and some parsley for more colour. I use chicken Better Than Bouillon to make my broth so I left out the salt. Since I’m married to a Ukrainian I also added a couple cloves of minced garlic. I use evaporated skim milk in it for added creaminess.

    Only thing I did different is I used top the tator instead of sour cream and I added about a cup and a half of corn. Will definitely make again!

    First time I made it exactly as written with the exception I used ham bone broth, tonight I made a few changes: added 1 cup frozen butternut squash cubes and 1 cup of frozen corn. Equally delicious.

  19. Delicious and easy! I followed it almost to the letter, except instead of chicken broth I made broth from the ham bone and a few extra shakes of different seasonings. Made Red Lobster cheddar biscuits on the side. Perfect Fall dinner. Thanks for sharing,!

  21. I made this recipe a couple days ago, and I must say it did not dissapoint! I did have to put it on high sooner and cook a little longer, but both of those could be that my slow cooker is dying and I cut my potatoes a bit to big. I used a ham bone and ham I had frozen in my freezer from Christmas. In the end I only needed to add a little salt and pepper, but that was fine because I didn’t add any at the beginning as I was using a Dearborn ham. The soup was nice and thick and creamy. Even my husband who really doesn’t care for soups loved it. We finished it off in just 2 days! Thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipe! This one is now in my permanent recipe organizer on my kitchen counter!
