Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes will make you forget your childhood canned sauce memories and make you LOVE sloppy joes again.
Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes came together pretty organically and randomly for us. We have had Philly Cheese Steak Grilled Cheese sandwiches in our rotation for years (because they are AMAZING) and one day we made up a skillet and…. our bread had become furry.
Gross. Right?
So we had hamburger buns on hand from a hamburger night meal a couple of nights before. The changes I made were just enough to be extra gooey and “sloppy” and only took about a minute.
EDITED: You guys are amazing, in just 7 16 30 days you have loved this recipe so much it has already been re-pinned over 125,000 175,000 520,000 times. Philly Cheese Steak Hamburger Helper Skillet? YES.
- Cook exactly as described except double the broth (leave the cornstarch the same).
- Do not rinse your macaroni, the starch will keep the sauce thickened.
- At the step where you’d add the cheese, instead add the macaroni.
- Stir it well together and cook for 30 seconds or until thickened.
- Add in the Provolone Cheese and stir for just a couple of seconds and serve immediately.
This was a second variation of this Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes recipe we ended up making a week after we made these sloppy joes for the first time. I posted a recipe for this too! Head on over after you’re done on this page, its the best pasta dish we’ve had this year!

Tools Used in the making of these Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes:
Cast Iron Skillet: This is my most used pan in my kitchen, heavy, keeps heat well and gives the BEST sear ever.
Chef’s Knife: This knife is one of the three most used tools in my kitchen (tongs and my pig tail flipper are the other two). I love it, I’ve had it for almost 10 years and it is as sharp today as the day I got it. (left column, second from the top). Mind you I love it this much even though I have a ridiculously expense knife set as well.
Worcestershire Sauce: Do not leave this out or sub it for anything else, this is a main flavor component and this brand is my absolute go-to.
Cheez Whiz: I know what you are thinking, Cheez Whiz? This isn’t even in the ingredients. Yes, I know…because it is a secret guilty pleasure. I add it to the top of my sloppy joes even with the Provolone mixed in. I won’t lie, it isn’t high end, but it is DARN good.
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small yellow onion diced
- 1 small green bell pepper diced
- 8 ounces brown mushrooms minced
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 cup beef broth
- 8 ounces Provolone Cheese Slices chopped (use 6oz if you don't want it very cheesy)
- 6 brioche hamburger buns
Instructions
- Add the ground beef to a large cast iron skillet (this browns very well) and brown until a deep brown crust appears before breaking the beef apart.
- Stir the ground beef and brown until a deep crust appears on about 50 or so percent of the beef.
- Remove the beef (you can leave the fat) and add the butter and the onions and bell peppers and mushrooms.
- Let brown for 1-2 minutes before stirring, then let brown for another 1-2 minutes before stirring again.
- Add the beef back into the pan.
- In a small cup mix the beef broth and cornstarch together
- Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, beef broth/cornstarch mixture into the pan.
- Cook until the mixture is only slightly liquidy (about 75% of the mixture is above liquid), 3-5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, add in the provolone cheese.
- Served on toasted brioche buns.
Love this recipe! Thank you so much for sharing! Made it for a Bunco group and those ladies gobbled it down. Scared me when I put the shredded cheese in and it clumped but keeping it on warm did the trick and it was fine!
Glad you enjoyed the recipe Terri and thank you for the five star review.
This has to be my 100th time making this. This time I used lean ground chicken. All ingredients doubled except the onion. Added 3TBL cornstarch because mine is usually runny. Will be using Cooper (sharp American) and provolone mix. This is absolutely amazing!! Everyone, especially my son, LOVES this. It would be incredible with some hot cherry peppers from the jar, but he doesn’t like spice. I just add separately.
You made my day Jennifer. Thank you for the great feedback and five star review.

I picked this recipe to teach 11,12,13 yr olds how to cook while I stay with them for a week. I want to create excitement for the kids while my friends their parents are gone and the kids become capable cooks who make tasty meals. My daughter and son in law and children love this as well. They both cook and like the options you offer on what one can make from this recipe if this is a meal made on the fly with what you have on hand.
Easy and delicious
Thanks Denise and thank you for the five star review.
I want to make this in the crockpot. Do I cook everything first in the pan?

That was phenomenal, prepared as written (but used standard hamburger buns, not brioche). Picky grandkids were clueless about the mushrooms and they ate every single bite! And, I loved the cheese pull effect!
This was delicious! We used ground turkey and I just put some extra streak seasoning on it while browning the meat to make it more beefy.
I will be making this again. Thanks for a yummy recipe!
You’re so welcome and thank you for the five star review!
Sabrina, I made this recipe tonight and it was so delicious. My husband went back for seconds.???
I love it! So glad you guys enjoyed the Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes. They are SOOO good and thanks Marjorie, for the five star review 🙂
If you’re using cheap ground beef, please drain it. Mine was so greasy that I had to use a cheese cloth. It was good. Everyone loved it.
Made this tonight along with some cabbage soup. The sandwiches were delicious.
Made this tonight for Sunday family dinner and everyone really liked it a lot. The only thing we collectively thought was that the flavor was maybe a little too much mushroom forward (at least for us … and that’s splitting hairs). So for us, next ime we make it we will probably cut the mushrooms by half and think it will be perfect for us.
I’ve made this and it’s delicious. I’m hoping to make it again soon.
My grand children’s will love this!!
Can’t wait to hear!
I am not a very good cook and I feel intimidated trying new recipes. I took a chance on this and I’m so glad I did! I followed the steps exactly as written and my sandwiches turn out perfect every time. The only thing I do differently is I put the meat on the bun then put the cheese on and toast them in the oven all made up. This is delicious and has the exact flavor of Philly cheese steaks. Thank you for building my confidence in cooking new recipes!
You’re one of the reasons I enjoy creating easy make at home recipes for home cooks. Thanks Chelsea and thanks for the five star review.
I’ve made this at least 5 times, it’s my favorite sloppy joe recipe! So delicious!!!
Great to hear Gabrielle! Thank you for the five star review!
Great recipe! Used a little less broth and made this into a wrap instead of using a bun!
For a inexpensive meal, this was really good. Easy and fast. I blew the first batch with to much salt because I didn’t have my glasses on lol, but still really good. Going to make it again tonight. This time gonna use egg noodles or mash potatoes. Love your recipes.
Thanks! And thank you for the 5 star review.
This is one of my go to recipes. The family loves it. It’s relatively simple and inexpensive. We personally love it on pretzel buns.
Do the nutrition facts include the bun or just the meat/filling?
Great question! Includes everything on the ingredient list.
Made this and it was delicious!! Kiddos loved it to. Was going to make for my daughters birthday party for about 20 people, but wanted to know if after I do all the steps if I could throw it in a crockpot and put the cheese over top so it’s easier for serving?
You certainly could!
This was absolutely DELICIOUS! My husband was moaning while eating it. LOL
I didn’t have fresh bell peppers so I used about 2 cups of frozen onions and peppers, and I only had 2 slices of provolone cheese, so I used Colby jack for the rest. Saving this recipe to use over and over again. Thank you
You’re welcome and thank you LeAnn for the 5 stars.
So good! Made these for solar eclipse day and everybody loved them.
So glad everyone enjoyed the solar eclipse AND the Sloppy Joes!
OMG THESE WERE BOMB!!!!!! Super easy to make! The prep was the most work but overall SO easy and delish!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
You’re so welcome Jessica! Thanks for making my day!
Made these tonight and mmm mmmm good! Minor substitutions/changes bc it’s what we had:
We don’t like green peppers so I used red. Like another post added minced garlic bc we like it. I use Better than Beef bouillon mix for the beef broth. Oh and we had sliced Colby Jack on hand to use.
I made mine in a tortilla wrap.
Look forward to making it again and think it would make great lil slider type sandwiches for our next neighborhood party.
Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Loved this recipe!! Didn’t have any peppers but also didn’t miss them. Next time I’ll drain the fat, or go leaner on the ground beef. Keeping and sharing this recipe ?
Smoking the meat first. 4-5# worth and then finishing in the slow cooker. Should I quadruple the rest of the ingredients or just double them?
Hi Zack, sorry for the late response. Our recipes have a “Yield” slider bar to hep you with this. I moved the Yield to “25” which netted 4.17 pounds of beef and all the ingredients automatically update accordingly. Please let us know how your Sloppy Joes turned out!
definitely want to make, but does the ketchup really add to it? Nothing against it, just curious. Thanks for sharing! Looks very tasty.
A simple and great recipe I did use 2 cups of broth and 2 T flour. I also added banana peppers, 3 oz cream cheese, and leftover mini penne and turned it into a skillet meal. It turned out excellent.
Excellent I love the instructions on how to get a good char on the meat. I used a cast iron skillet and it worked great.
Thanks for posting!
You’re welcome Penny and thanks for the 5 star review!
I made this according to the recipe and everyone loved it. I was concerned 1 lb of meat would not be enough for the 4 of us but it was plenty, even with my hardy eaters. I’ll definitely make this again!
So glad you enjoyed the Sloppy Joes!
This was great!!! I heated my cast iron skillet til it was piping hot and added a little evoo and put my beef in and squished it so that it covered the bottom of skillet and waited a good two minutes and then continued with the recipe and it was delicious
I made this and with the onion, I used one green pepper and one red pepper. Instead of water, I used a 14oz. can of beef broth and omitted the salt. We had it on burrito shells because I thought the buns would be too messy. They were delicious!
Can you freeze these?
Yes!
Delicious recipe, easy to make. I always add a touch more Worcestershire sauce to mine. Definitely worth trying if you want something new.
I work full time and so I look for SUPER EASY recipes that I can make ahead which my husband and I both enjoy, and this one did not disappoint us. (The only thing I didn’t include was the mushrooms because we had mushrooms in another dish this week. I served these sandwiches in large Amorosa Hoagie Rolls, rather than hamburger buns.)
After only a few bites, my husband gave this a “thumbs up!” Not only that, but he liked it so much, he mentioned it to the men at his Bible group and to a couple of fellows the next day. To which they said: “So, where’s OURS?!” LOL
I will be sharing this recipe with them and/or with their wives to make FOR them as well as with my mother!
Thank You! This one’s a keeper!
This tastes sooo good!! It’s really easy to make too! You have to try this recipe!
How much is a serving size? Does the calorie count only include the meat mixture?
Serving sizes become an issue because people will have ingredients of different sizes. Packaged products are weighed and measured at the time of creation which makes their measurements accurate. The only way to accurately know the measurements of meals is to weigh and divide.
I knew when I read it that this recipe would be a winner. I didn’t follow it to the letter because recipes are more a guideline in my kitchen. I omitted the mushrooms. I added some seasoned salt and extra pepper. I used frozen peppers that I put up from my garden. And I made a dark roux instead of using cornstarch because that’s my preference. We served it on some small kaiser rolls, then husband came back for a third helping which he put over pasta. I was thinking it would be fabulous over mashed or baked potatoes or even rice. So so so yummy!
Love this! You are quite the creative Chef! It DOES sound yummy. Thanks so much for taking time to let us know how you made the sloppy joes and thanks so much for the 5 star review 🙂
Amazing! I did add garlic and a bit of St Elmos seasoning which I pretty much add to everything. I used toasted steak rolls. Brioche buns were not available. I will make this again and again. Thank you for sharing.
Ever eat something and that first bite (after the 2nd or 3rd chew) when it all hits you close your eyes and say mmmmm while mentally and physically drooling? That is THAT meal. It’s the one that forces another bite, another bite, I’m going to finish it. I won’t make standard sloppy joes again because of this recipe.
LOL! This comment made my day!
I made this just as written and it was great.
Delicious! We used Hawaiian rolls.
So glad you enjoyed the Sloppy Joes. With Hawaiian rolls would just take this to another level. YUMMMMM!!!! Thanks for the 5 star rating Shanita!
Awesome Sauce! Have made this multiple times, very easy and tasty recipe. Going to try her other sloppy joe recipes
These were so delish!!! Must have recipe!! ????
Glad you enjoyed the Philly Cbeese Steak Sloppy Joes Christine!
