Sabrina’s Air Fryer Brats (In Hoagies)

This Air-Fried Brat Sandwich makes a delicious family meal. The large hoagie rolls and hearty brats make it a super filling, tasty dish for a busy weeknight meal. The juicy, delicious brat and sweet and savory peppers are crowd-pleasing flavors that the entire family will surely enjoy.

I used the air fryer cooking process to prepare the entire sandwich. Not only can you make an easy Air-Fried brat, but you can also follow the directions to prep the peppers and rolls in the air fryer. It only takes 20 minutes to cook the whole recipe: fourteen quick minutes for the brat, three minutes to cook the peppers, and two minutes to toast the bread. It couldn’t be easier!

Ingredients

  • Brat: To make air-fried brats, use a brat in a casing. That way, the brat is already formed into the perfect size and shape for the sandwich, and you don’t have to worry about preparing the meat before cooking it.
  • Hoagies: Hoagie rolls are the perfect bread for this air-fried brat sandwich. They’re fluffy, filling, and sturdy enough to hold up the brat, which is heavier than most sandwich ingredients.
  • Oil: Because you’re using an air fryer, you don’t need a lot of oil. Just spray the brats with vegetable oil and toss the peppers in before cooking. This makes the recipe crispy and helps the kosher salt stick.
  • Bell peppers: Use a combination of red and green peppers. The toasted peppers add a pop of color, delicious flavor, and wonderful texture to the sandwiches.
  • Kosher Salt: Kosher salt enhances flavors without overpowering the brat. Its coarse texture allows precise seasoning—you can always add more. Kosher salt is a versatile seasoning that chefs and home cooks love.

Kitchen Tools & Equipment

  • Air Fryer: Air fryers are great for getting that crispy, juicy brat without oil for frying.
  • Kitchen Tongs: Tongs are great for handling hot foods like the brats.
  • Digital Meat Thermometer: Use the digital meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature of the brats.
  • Aluminum Foil: Used to tent the brats and peppers while toasting the hoagie rolls.

How to Make

Time needed: 25 minutes.

  1. Preheat:

Preheat the air fryer to 365 degrees before cooking, and spray the basket with cooking spray.Air Fryer Brats in Hoagies raw sausages in air fryer basker

  2. Brats Cooking Time:

Add uncooked brats to the air fryer basket in a single layer. Close the fryer and cook for 7 minutes. Then, flip the sausages with the kitchen tongs and spray them with cooking spray before putting them in for another 7 minutes. After air-frying brats, you can use a digital meat thermometer to double-check the internal temperature. As long as they’re done, remove the brats from the fryer and place them on a plate tented in foil to stay warm.Air Fryer Brats in Hoagies cooked brats in air fryer basket

  3. Peppers:

While the brats cook, you can slice the green and red peppers into strips. Then, toss the peppers in oil and salt. Place the seasoned peppers in the fryer basket. Cook for 3 minutes. Remove the brats from the fryer basket and place them under the foil with the brats.Air Fryer Brats in Hoagies cooked peppers in air fryer basket

  4. Toast:

Add the hoagie rolls to the basket and cook them for 2 minutes to be nicely toasted.

  5. Assemble:

Lay down the toasted hoagie rolls so that they’re open. Then, close the brats and peppers on hoagie rolls to make the perfect savory brat sandwich. Air Fryer Brats in Hoagies with chips

Toppings for Brats

  • Mustard: Mustard is commonly paired with meats, vegetables, and cheeses, especially as a condiment for sandwiches, hamburgers, and hot dogs. It is perfect for your Air-Fried Brats (In Hoagies). Try it with yellow mustard, spicy mustard, Dijon mustard, or honey mustard.
  • Ketchup: Sweet and tangy ketchup isn’t just for hot dogs, you can definitely add it to your brats too!
  • Dill Pickles: The tangy, acidic flavor of dill pickles complements the brat’s savory richness. You can enjoy them on the side or even as a topping.
  • Caramelized Onions: Caramelized Onions add savory sweetness as well as makes your brats a bit more gourmet tasting.
  • Sauerkraut: Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) is another favorite topping for brats, especially if you pair it with spicy brown mustard.
  • Hot Peppers and Onions: Add a spicy hot peppers and onions jarred mix for a flavorful and colorful topping for the hoagies.
  • Cheese: Melt some cheddar, Swiss, or pepper jack on top of your brats. My Beer Cheese Sauce would taste great, too!

What to Pair With Air Fryer Brats

  • Crispy Sweet Potato Fries that are perfectly crispy and still fluffy in the middle with both fried and oven-baked directions with a single magic ingredient to keep them crispy!
  • Beer Battered Onion Rings are the perfect combination of crispy, light, and fluffy, with a hint of sweetness from the beer.
  • Velveeta Mac and Cheese is the ultimate creamy, cheesy comfort food and only takes 15 minutes to prepare. It is sure to be a hit with your entire family!
  • Milk Boiled Corn is an easy side dish. It is boiled with water, milk, butter, and salt until it is sweet, tender, and buttery in less than 20 minutes!
  • A traditional coleslaw recipe is a quick and easy side dish featuring a shredded cabbage mix and a creamy dressing prepared in just 5 minutes!
  • Classic Potato Salad is a creamy mayonnaise dressing enhanced with relish, mustard, and celery salt, which coats the potatoes and chopped hard-boiled eggs.
  • Easy Greek Pasta Salad with mozzarella, black olives, cherry tomatoes, and bell peppers in a creamy Italian dressing is the perfect side dish for a potluck or picnic!
  • Chips: Grab your favorite potato chips and enjoy your Air Fryer Brat in Hoagies.

How to Store

  • Serve: Don’t leave Air Fryer Brats at room temperature for over 2 hours.
  • Store: If you have leftovers, separate the brats and peppers from the hoagie rolls. Then, store the sausage in an air-tight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Freeze: You can store frozen sausage for up to 2 months in a safe, airtight container. Reheat the leftover brats on the stovetop or in the air fryer. When ready to enjoy the leftovers, serve them in fresh hoagie rolls.

Frequent Questions

How do I know when the Brats are done cooking?

To see if the brats are done, first check to see that they look crispy on the outside. If they do, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature.

What can I add to the Brats hoagies?

Combining brats and air fryer peppers in hoagie rolls tastes terrific, but you can always add more sandwich filling. Try topping the rolls with sauerkraut or adding caramelized onions along with the peppers. You can spread sauce over the hoagie rolls, like brown mustard or BBQ Sauce for extra flavor.

Variations

  • Air-fried Italian Sausage: You can make an Italian twist on this sandwich with Air-Fried Italian Sausage. Since Italian sausage is already prepared with Italian seasoning, it adds a nice new flavor to the entire recipe. Cook the Air-Fried Italian Sausages, prepare the bell peppers, and serve them with hoagies with some provolone cheese.
  • Meat: You can also try different kinds of sausage meat like chicken sausage or flavored pre-cooked sausage. Just keep in mind that each other type of meat will have a slightly different cooking temperature, and you’ll need to adjust the cooking times accordingly.
